I found this hard today. Staring at a screen isn’t fun with a headache and this turned out to be one of those things where you get an idea in your head, but you just can’t get it out.
I guess this has ended up being a poem. It is about what some girls go through growing up and eventually finding happiness with your appearance. I am no poet. The whole concept is new and unnerving for me, but I rolled with it! I don’t think I conveyed as much emotion as I would have liked to but in a 30-day challenge, I hope nobody is expecting any masterpieces!
Here it goes…
I looked in the mirror and I didn’t see me.
For so long, she loathed her appearance,
When she was 10 years old, she wished she was blonde,
“Blondes have more fun”, she was told.
When she was 11 years old, she wished that she wasn’t so tall,
When she was 12 years old, she wished that her ears didn’t stick out so much,
People made fun of her.
When she was 13 years old, she had an operation to get them pinned back,
It didn’t work.
When she was 14 years old, she wished her nose was smaller,
“He said he’d fancy you if your nose wasn’t so big.”
When she was 15 years old, she wished she wasn’t so skinny,
“Floorboards”, was the nickname.
When she was 16 years old, she wished she didn’t have acne,
They made her feel disgusting.
When she was 17 years old, She wished she wasn’t so pale,
She felt like she looked ill.
When she was 18 years old, she wished she had an even jawline,
“You could never be a model with your uneven face”, they said.
When she was 19 years old, she wished that her lips were fuller,
All of her friends could afford lip fillers.
When she was 20 years old, she wished her eyebrows weren’t so sparse,
A 90’s baby. A victim of over-plucking.
When she was 21 years old, she wished she had whiter teeth,
All of her friends could afford teeth whitening.
When she was 22 years old, she wished she didn’t have grey hairs,
She felt old at 22.
When she was 23 years old, she wished she didn’t have alopecia,
Her hair fell out in huge clumps.
The older she grew, the more things she despised about herself.
When she was 24 years old, she looked in the mirror and didn’t see herself.
She had finally learned,
Even the most beautiful wish they were different
And she was the most beautiful
When she was 24 years old, she wished she realised how perfect she is earlier.
